Licenciada em Engenharia Química pela Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, mestre em Embalagem na School of Packaging da Michigan State University e doutorada em Biotecnologia, especialidade em Ciência e Engenharia Alimentar, na Escola Superior de Biotecnologia da Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Docente das disciplinas de Embalagem e membro integrado do Centro de Biotecnologia e Química Fina - CBQF/Laboratório Associado.
 
Os interesses de investigação incluem processos de transferência de massa aplicados à embalagem, vida-útil de alimentos e avaliação da segurança dos materiais em particular de biomateriais (nanocelulose) e materiais reciclados. É Coordenadora do Centro de Qualidade e Segurança Alimentar (CINATE) desde 2013 e Coordenadora do Laboratório de Embalagem (Laboratório Nacional de Referência) desde 1990. Representa Portugal na European Network of Food Contact Materials Laboratories since 2004 e tem integrado diferentes grupos de trabalho da EFSA.
