Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto will host an inspiring morning with Amena Karimyan on 29 May at 10:00 a.m., in the Edifício do Paraíso. The theme of this talk will be Science, Freedom and Thriving Futures.
Her life story and dedication to science are a powerful testimony of resilience, freedom, and human potential. In this talk, Amena Karimyan will share her vision of how scientific knowledge can serve as a force for individual and collective empowerment, fostering more just, inclusive, and sustainable societies. A profound reflection on the role of science in shaping prosperous futures.
Amena Karimyan is a civil engineer and professor at the Herat Technical Institute. She was one of the first women in Afghanistan to engage in the development of astronomy in the country. She is the CEO and founder of the Kayhana Astronomical Group, established in 2018, which encourages young people to explore astronomy. In July 2021, Karimyan and her all-girls astronomy group received an award at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics. That same year, she was recognised by the BBC as one of the 100 most inspiring women in the world.
