Five intensive hours to transform ideas into functional technological solutions, as a team: this was the challenge launched by the Fast Paced Hackathon “Innovation in Action – Creating Solutions with Electronics and Instrumentation”, promoted at the Faculty of Biotechnology of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in Porto.
Participants from different areas of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, with an interest in electronics, instrumentation and technological innovation, gathered at the Biotechnology Building to work on the best response. Revealed only at the start of the event, the problem put participants’ adaptability, critical thinking and creativity to the test, as they worked in teams to conceive, plan and implement a functional electronic system.
Throughout the hackathon, students used different tools and technologies to develop original solutions, which were later presented to an evaluation panel. The initiative promoted the practical application of technical knowledge, as well as the development of transversal skills such as teamwork, communication and creative problem-solving.
“The Hackathon showed that when creativity, collaboration and technology come together, ideas turn into impactful solutions,” noted Pedro Rodrigues, lecturer at the Faculty of Biotechnology. “In just five hours, we saw students create prototypes with sensors, measurement systems and intelligent devices, proof that innovation is action. That is why I believe so strongly in the power of education - it is the spark that ignites the flame of transformation!” he added.
At the end of the event, the winning teams were distinguished, recognising the merit, creativity and quality of the solutions presented. The winners were Martin Matejčík, Viliam Podbrežný, João Barrote Vaz and Rodrigo Estima Ribeiro, from the Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering.
The “Innovation in Action” initiative thus reinforced the commitment of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and the Faculty of Biotechnology to experiential learning, technological innovation and the preparation of students for the challenges of the market and society.
