Program Description

At the interface between Engineering and Medical Biotechnology

At the interface between Engineering and Medical Biotechnology, the health sector has been changing over the last few decades. This interface is decisive in a society called upon to respond to new challenges. In this context, the profile of the Biomedical Engineer was created. The Master’s in Biomedical Engineering presents a multidisciplinary program that allows graduates to pursue a professional career in areas related to biomaterials and medical devices, medical biotechnology, imaging, diagnostic and therapeutic systems, processing and treatment of biomedical signals, and health technology management. In this Master’s, teaching is distinguished by its strong practical and laboratory component, and takes place in a unique environment, where students are exposed to R&D projects of high scientific and technological quality, developed in our world-class research center. Each student can tailor a curricular path to meet their needs by choosing from a range of optional curricular units and by carrying out internship/thesis projects that incorporate knowledge acquired in a practical context. The partnerships established with various health and biomedical institutions allow students to interact in close proximity with the sectors where the practice of biomedical engineering is developed at the highest level, in a national and international context. What is the role of the Biomedical Engineer? Within the scope of the MEB, professionals develop a complete portfolio of skills that allow them to work in different contexts, including the industrial sector, services, R&D, and hospital management. There, they will carry out:

  • Development, production and validation of implantable, therapeutic and diagnostic medical devices;
  • Planning and execution of biomedical research projects in private or public laboratories;
  • Development of diagnostic data monitoring systems;
  • Coordination of clinical engineering projects for the creation and maintenance of databases related to instruments or medical records;
  • Management of physical, financial and human resources in laboratories, industrial units or hospitals;
  • Consultancy oriented to laboratories and companies in the health sector;
  • Teaching and training of human resources in the field of biomedical technology;
  • Management of multidisciplinary teams and communication with different audiences.

Who is the Master’s in Biomedical Engineering for?

This Master’s is intended for students who hold a first cycle degree in Engineering, or some other suitable academic background and / or professional profile.

Deployment and Support Engineer
Throughout my master’s degree, I was introduced to various concepts and tools related to medical imaging, hospital management and even coding. Since I am currently working in the field of medical imaging IT, I am able to apply some of that knowledge on a daily basis.
