Pathology and Nutrition I

Objectives and competences

Pedagogical objectives:

  • To know the concept and the scope of diet therapy;
  • To understand the relevance of diet therapy as a therapeutic tool and a mean to improve the quality of life of the patients;
  • To know the epidemiological and pathophysiologic characteristics of the diseases, their etiology and respective nutritional therapeutics;
  • To establish dietary plans in view of the patient's pathology, not ignoring their lifestyles and preferences;
  • To develop skills in the nutritionist-patient communication: to be able to use easy and clear language to transmit dietary and nutritional advices as well as behavioral advices associated with the prevention or treatment of different diseases.

Expected results:

  • To acquire knowledge about epidemiological and pathophysiologic characteristics of the diseases, their etiology and respective nutritional therapeutics;
  • To be able to interpret and to solve clinical nutrition scenarios;
  • To be able to set realistic objectives and to monitor the patient over time.

 

Teaching Methodologies

This subject includes a theoretical component, constituted by expositive sessions, where students are frequently questioned and invited to participate. The practical sessions consisted of clinical cases resolution with discussing of different possibilities of approach. Students are invited to interpret and to solve different clinical cases between lessons, and to present it in the practical sessions.

 

Syllabus

Theoretical sessions:

  1. Introduction to Diet therapy – the dietary and nutritional therapy in disease.
  2. Methodology for implementation of individual dietary plan.
  3. Nutrition in the life cycle: dietetic intervention in pathology in elderly and occurring during pregnancy.
  4. Epidemiology, etiopathogenesis and nutritional therapy:
    1. Obesity (including obesity surgery)
    2. Cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, dislipidemia, etc.)
    3. Diabetes
    4. Metabolic syndrome
    5. Hyperuricemia
    6. Gastrointestinal tract and accessory glands disorders
    7. Food allergies and food intolerances
    8. Anaemia
  5. Nutrition and bone diseases: osteopenia and osteoporosis

Practical sessions:

  1. Construction of a dietary plan following the method proposed by the American Diabetic Association and the American Dietetic Association
  2. Clinical case: pregnant woman with pregnancy related disease; elderly people with pathology
  3. Clinical case: obesity I
  4. Clinical case: obesity II
  5. Clinical case: hypertension
  6. Clinical case: dislipidemia
  7. Clinical case: diabetes I
  8. Clinical case: diabetes II
  9. Clinical case: Metabolic syndrome
  10. Clinical case: hyperuricemia
  11. Clinical case: gastrointestinal tract diseases I
  12. Clinical case: gastrointestinal tract diseases II
