General Chemistry

6 ECTS / Semester / Portuguese

Objectives and competences

To provide the concepts of Fundamental Chemistry, considered essential for the understanding of phenomena related to biological sciences, bioengineering, and nutrition. With this general objective, it is considered as a priority to understand the structure of matter and correlate it with its physical and chemical properties, namely those involving chemical reactions in aqueous solution; understand and manipulate the calculation of concentrations, pH and stoichiometric calculations. Provide some concepts of Physical-Chemistry, considered essential for the understanding of phenomena related to biosciences and bioengineering. With this general objective, it is understood as a priority to understand the bases of kinetics of chemical reactions, and thermochemistry.

Teaching Methodologies

Lectures common to all groups, accompanied by theoretical-practical classes to solve application problems, carried out in class, usually with a number of students less than 20.

Laboratory classes (#3), involving work related to the most important points of the subject.

Syllabus

Lectures:

  1. Matter and its constitution; measurements in chemistry.
  2. Chemical bonding, basic concepts.
  3. Solutions.
  4. Chemical reactions.
  5. Chemical equilibrium.
  6. Acid-base equilibrium.
  7. Thermochemistry.
  8. Chemical kinetics.

Theoretical-practices:
