Sara Baptista da Silva

Invited Professor

Bio

Sara Baptista da Silva holds a BSc and MSc degree in Microbiology from the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a specialisation in Pharmaceutical Technology from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Porto. She completed her academic degree with distinction, focusing on bio-based nanosystems for treating degenerative ocular diseases. As a Post-doctoral researcher, Sara studied new functionalized biomaterials with nano/microsystems for infection control and the treatment of chronic wounds. She has been an integral member of over 10 multidisciplinary projects. Her work has led to her being the inventor and co-inventor of 2 patents, author/co-author of ca. 40 publications (articles in international journals and book chapters), and the supervisor of over 40 undergraduate, Master's, and PhD students, including the award of the Fulbright Master's Degree Prize (by the Fulbright American Association). She has also served as a jury member for Master's and PhD thesis defenses. Sara is on the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Pharmacology, a reviewer for several journals, and a member of 6 scientific associations. She has worked on the organizing committee and as a scientific consultant for national and international conferences, participating in numerous events. Combining her passion for R&D with an entrepreneurial spirit, she co-founded Blendera®, an R&D project that received a merit award from the COHiTEC program (Porto Business School - UP), supported by COTEC Portugal. She also worked at the University of Porto Innovation's Technology Transfer Office (UPIN) under the UPINTECH program. Additionally, she served as Vice President, President, and founder of the first American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists in Portugal (AAPS). Sara is a dedicated researcher with interests in clinical microbiology, micro/nanotechnology, and the development of advanced biomaterials for biomedical applications, with a strong focus on natural and sustainable materials.
