Joana Cristina Barbosa, researcher in the Nutrition and Health research group, and Ezequiel Coscueta, researcher in the Bioactives and Bioproducts research group, both from the Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF) of the Faculty of Biotechnology of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, were the winners of the “General Public” category at the 7th edition of the Science Communication in Microbiology competition.

The awarded work, entitled “O microbioma oculto (‘dark microbiome’)”, stood out for its ability to communicate a current and scientifically challenging topic in microbiology in a clear and visually engaging way.

Promoted by the Portuguese Society of Microbiology (SPM), the competition aims to encourage science communication through the creation of an image accompanied by an explanatory text that presents relevant concepts and research in an accessible manner. This work will now be published on the Cartoons of Microbiology platform, together with other submissions that meet the quality criteria defined in the competition regulations. This initiative is dedicated to science communication, reinforcing its commitment to bringing microbiology closer to the public through creative and informative formats.

The Faculty of Biotechnology and CBQF congratulate the researchers on this distinction, which reflects the quality and impact of the research carried out at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and its commitment to sharing scientific knowledge with the wider community.
