PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Microbiology) from the University of Porto. Integrated Master’s in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the same institution. João Botelho is an FCT-Tenure researcher at the Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF), Universidade Católica Portuguesa, where he coordinates the Data Science in Microbiology module.

His research focuses on bacterial evolution, antibiotic resistance, and computational microbiology, emphasizing microbial genomics, mobile genetic elements, and CRISPR-phage coevolution. He has authored over 30 scientific publications and received international recognition, including being ranked among the world’s Top 2% scientists. He has conducted research across Portugal, Germany, and Spain, and is actively involved in teaching and student supervision.
