The Bioactives and Bioproducts research group, led Manuela Pintado, director and researcher at Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry, took part in the 7th edition of the international conference WASTES: Solutions, Treatments and Opportunities, held from 3 to 5 September on Madeira Island.

The conference, dedicated to waste valorisation and the promotion of sustainable solutions, featured the presentation of five scientific papers developed by the group. These works addressed topics such as the recovery of bioactive compounds, the utilisation of agro-industrial by-products, and the development of high value-added bioproducts.

The papers presented were:

  • Sustainable valorization of wheat by-products through a green bioprocessing
  • Circular economy synergies:  leveraging agrifood waste for sustainable shoe materials
  • Thermally processed eggshells as a renewable source of calcium carbonate for industrial use
  • From waste to wellness: sardine byproducts as rich sources of bioactive ingredients
  • Valorizing sardine by-products: sustainable functional canned tuna through protein hydrolysates
  • Quercus rotundifolia and Quercus robur shells: nutritional value and circular economy potential

Participation in WASTES 2025 enabled the researchers to showcase the latest findings from their investigations, share the innovative results emerging from the projects Blue Bioeconomy Pact, OakFood, BioShoes4All, and TRANSCoLAB Plus, foster scientific exchange, and explore new opportunities for collaboration with both national and international institutions.
