Fish Welfare and Ethology
João Saraiva
Did you know that fish experience emotions, from pain to pleasure? And that the nutritional quality of fish decreases when they live in unstimulating environments or endure stressful deaths?
João Saraiva studies fish behavior and leads the Fish Ethology and Welfare Group at the Centre of Marine Sciences in Faro. His research focuses on improving animal welfare, both in aquaculture and fisheries. He is the author of over 50 scientific publications and co-editor of a book on fish welfare.
