10 Reasons to Study at ESB

TEACHING EXCELLENCE

Students are immersed in a modern scientific and technological environment with a highly qualified teaching staff which is focused on the future. This staff brings together a number of top specialists in their respective fields all sharing the same high level of pedagogical rigor. In addition, the ESB benefits from its presence in around 40 national and international teaching and research networks involving hundreds of renowned institutions.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND INTEGRAL KNOWLEDGE

The ESB promotes learning approaches that encourage an integral and cultural development of the student. With modules on subjects such as Critical Thinking, Creative Writing and Personal Skills Development, the learning environment challenges each student to excel.

KNOWLEDGE FROM EXPERIENCE

A student at the ESB learns by experimenting. Many subjects have a strong laboratory component where small class sizes stimulate individual problem-solving skills. Proximity and personalized attention in the relationship between teacher and student are characteristics we are proud of.

A REFERENCE IN RESEARCH

The ESB has a research center that is recognized for its excellence in several areas of Biotechnology, as demonstrated by its prestigious classification, since 2004, as an Associate Laboratory. The "Researchers Club" welcomes, from the first year of study, all undergraduate students interested in joining the ongoing research activities and developing projects beyond those defined in the curriculum.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS AND MENTORING PROGRAM

The wide range of national and international partnerships that the ESB has with industry and other organizations, provides a privileged platform for placing students in curricular and extra-curricular internships and identifying employment opportunities. On the other hand, the Professional Mentoring Program provides a link to the ESB’s Alumni, creating a unique opportunity to guide academic progress and optimize career opportunities.

INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY

The International Office promotes and organizes internships abroad through the Erasmus program, among others. Such internships can take place in universities, businesses or other types of organization and, over the years, the ESB has already placed more than a thousand students in such international internships.

A MULTIDISCIPLINARY ENVIRONMENT

The ESB is part of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Porto, sited on a campus which houses several Faculties covering a wide range of disciplinary and application areas. The faculties actively promote open interaction, which includes making the courses in their curricula available to students enrolled in other courses. Many non-curricular activities, including volunteering at CASO - Católica Solidária and Gás África, are recognized and included in the Diploma Supplement of the degree certificate awarded.

EMPLOYABILITY AND MARKET RECOGNITION

Graduates of the ESB are particularly welcomed by the labor market, with many occupying prominent places in the health, environment and food sectors. The Student and Employability Service is available to support integration into the labor market, as well as organizing networking meetings where companies and students can meet and discuss career opportunities.

A STARTING POINT FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The ESB also trains students in and for entrepreneurship. Its BioSpin strategy has been promoting the design of business projects in the general field of biotechnology since 1994.

VOLUNTEERING AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

At the ESB, involvement in community activities is encouraged and this helps to develop skills such as time management and organization. The Department for Integral Personal Development (UDIP) offers a range of personal development experiences, including the opportunity to participate in the University’s existing voluntary projects.
