What's the secret behind the freshness of menthol gum?

More than a thousand high school students will visit the Faculty of Biotechnology, Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Porto, from this Wednesday until Friday. The institution's 32nd Open Week will allow students to participate in various experiments.

"Green roofs: rainwater harvesting in cities," "Biomaterials in the fight against chronic wounds," "The secret behind the freshness of menthol gum," and "Traditional bakery: yeast in action" are some of the most eye-catching names among the various experiences available.

The importance of water, the use of waste to create new foods and medicines, the causes and effects of pollution, and the discovery of solutions for treating chronic wounds are other themes that serve as the basis for the organized experiments.

The director of the Faculty of Biotechnology, Paula Castro, emphasizes that the initiative "aims to be a moment of great openness from higher education to secondary education." "We aim to contribute to scientific literacy by demonstrating in a rigorous, yet deconstructed, and sometimes fun way, that science decisively contributes to our health and well-being," she notes.
