When she decided to look for a degree that combined Biology and Chemistry, Anna Moxley knew exactly what she was searching for. Originally from Maryland, United States, and now living in Espinho, she found a unique opportunity to pursue her academic journey at the Faculty of Biotechnology of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
Anna explains that her choice resulted from careful research into the different study programmes available. "I was looking into degrees in Biology, Chemistry and Microbiology, and this was the one that interested me the most. Católica was the university that immediately caught my attention," she says.
Her decision was also influenced by the reputation of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Even before joining the Faculty of Biotechnology, Anna had already heard about the University's high academic standards, which reinforced her confidence in making this choice.
Interested in the life sciences from an early age, she found in Microbiology the perfect combination of two subjects she had always enjoyed. Within this field, Virology is the area that most sparks her scientific curiosity, as she considers it to be both particularly challenging and highly relevant.
A learning experience defined by close relationships
One of the aspects that surprised Anna the most was the close relationship between students and lecturers. For the American student, this supportive environment makes a significant difference to the learning experience.
"There is a very close connection between students and professors, and I believe it is much harder to build this kind of relationship at public universities," she says.
Although she completed only her secondary education in the United States, Anna believes that her experience at the Faculty of Biotechnology clearly reflects the lecturers' commitment to supporting students, both in the classroom and in laboratory sessions.
"From what I've experienced, there is much greater interaction between students and lecturers, whether during lectures, in the laboratories, or when asking questions. It's a very welcoming environment and it really helps me succeed in my academic life."
A degree that opens doors to the future
Although she has not yet decided on the professional path she wishes to follow, Anna believes that her degree will provide her with a strong scientific foundation to make that decision. Among the possibilities she is considering is a career related to Medicine and the Biological Sciences.
Her academic journey may even continue at the Faculty of Biotechnology. The Master's in Applied Microbiology is one of the options she is seriously considering for the coming years.
"Pursuing the Master's in Applied Microbiology here at the Faculty of Biotechnology is a very strong possibility."
As for the future, Anna is still unsure in which country she will build her career. However, there is one certainty she takes away from this international experience: Portugal has earned a special place in her heart.
"I don't know whether my future will be in Portugal. One thing is certain: it's a beautiful country, and I really enjoy living here."
