The CBQF - Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry, from the Faculty of Biotechnology of Univesidade Católica Portuguesa, was one of the highlighted exhibitors at the Science Meeting 2024, held in Porto from July 3 to 5. During the event, the centre presented innovative methods for monitoring environmental parameters and cutting-edge research in biomaterials and biopolymers for biomedical applications, as well as in vitro systems to measure the impact of ingredients and foods on gut microbiota.
One of the highlights of the event was the session organized by CBQF in collaboration with CIMO (Mountain Research Centre) and IPMA (Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere). This session focused on clean technologies for obtaining, characterizing, and applying natural extracts from native Portuguese plants, such as acorns, eucalyptus, and oregano.
CBQF demonstrated its expertise in the extraction and characterization of these plants, highlighting their applications in improving the quality and shelf life of food products, including meat, dairy, and fruits. CIMO presented its research on mountain plants, detailing their use in beverages and baking. IPMA discussed the application of plant extracts in fish preservation and the improvement of seafood quality.
Manuela Pintado, director of CBQF, commented: "The Science Meeting 2024 was an excellent opportunity to share our work in biotechnology in promoting sustainable innovation. We are proud of the impact of our research in the food, environmental, and biomedical industries, contributing to a more sustainable future".
It was a revealing meeting that reaffirmed CBQF's commitment to Excellence in Research and its impact on sustainable innovation, placing Portugal at the forefront of biotechnological solutions for a healthier and more resilient future.
