In Dialogue with Purificação Tavares and José Fernando Pinto dos Santos, moderated by Alberto Castro
When a Nobel Prize is announced, the Committee is always keen to emphasise the contribution that the laureates have made not only to science, but also to innovation and thus to society. However, little is said about how and by whom the necessary steps were taken, and even less is said about any controversies associated with developments in the interaction between science and society.
Could it be that by scrutinizing two specific cases, genetics and artificial intelligence, we'll be able to open this door and get clues as to whether, in practice, the theory is something else? In this conversation on science & society, against the backdrop of those questions, Purificação Tavares, university professor, researcher and entrepreneur, will talk to José Fernando Pinto dos Santos, also a university professor and researcher, and both will talk to the audience, all under the moderation of Alberto Castro, university professor and Student Ombudsman at Católica in Porto.
This is the first in a series of talks aimed at greater integration between the worlds of science and society, two worlds that have difficulty understanding each other, but on whose harmony the world we live in and our individual and collective happiness depend.
The event is free of charge, but please register using this form. The session will take place in the Arménio Miranda Auditorium of the Faculty of Biotechnology between 5.30pm and 7pm on 27 November 2024.
Speakers:
Purificação Tavares CGC Genetics, Universidade do Porto
Moderator:
As part of the launch of the interdisciplinary degree in Science and Society, the faculty is organising this series of talks. They are conversations about ideas. About how society as a whole sees scientific discovery and technological development. About what scientists, engineers and managers can do with these perspectives. About thinking and working across disciplines to shape a world we want to live in. About Science and Society.
