Integrated Laboratory Practices in Microbiology

5 ECTS / 2º Semestre / Português

Objectives and competences

To develop the ability to design and conduct research work in microbiology; to promote students’ familiarity with advanced laboratory methodologies; to foster teamwork and inter-laboratory collaboration; and to encourage the integration of different technical, methodological, and human resources in the development of a scientific project.

Competences to be acquired:
Understanding of the scientific research process applied to microbiology, including the selection and use of appropriate laboratory techniques; ability to plan and carry out experimental activities independently and in teams; and competence to collaborate with different research groups or institutions, valuing interdisciplinary work and the synergies it generates.

Teaching Methodologies

The curricular unit is based on learning centred on experimental practice and on the development of a mini research project. Each student team designs and carries out a project that integrates technical and human resources from at least two research groups/laboratories. The work is conducted under co-supervision, promoting inter-laboratory collaboration and exposure to multiple methodologies.
The unit begins with the presentation and allocation of the topics proposed by the ESB teaching staff. This is followed by a “free seminar” laboratory format, in which students work directly with their assigned supervisors, engaging in different laboratory environments and performing the experimental steps required for their project.

Syllabus

The contents are organized around research topics that explore the application of microbiology in different areas — food, environment, health, and biotechnology. These topics vary annually, allowing continuous updating and alignment with ongoing projects in the participating laboratories. Each theme incorporates relevant laboratory techniques, analytical methodologies, and critical reflection on experimental results.
