Rui Vieira da Cunha graduated in Law (2003) and practiced as a lawyer for five years, before completing his degree in Philosophy (2008). He has a postgraduate degree in Legal Medicine (2004) and another in Teaching (2009).

He is a member of MLAG (Mind, Language and Action Group) of the Institute of Philosophy of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto - concluding PhD on the concept of person, the problem of personal identity and technology. His main research interests lie on the intersection of philosophy and law (free will, human dignity, human enhancement, transhumanism, punishment purposes, etc.).
From 2013 to 2016, he joined the Scientific Communication Unit of IBMC, now i3s (Institute of Research and Innovation in Health), on the European project NERRI (Neuro-Enhancement Responsible Research and Innovation).

He is also a lecturer in the Business School of the Catholic University of Porto (of Social Philosophy and Ethics, of Christianity, Cultures and Organizations, and of Multidisciplinary Project, which focuses on argumentation, critical thinking and informal logic) and a member of ARGH (Argumentation Hub) in the Media Innovation Labs of the University of Porto.

He is a member of the IPO-Porto Ethics Committee and the i3s-Porto Ethics and Responsible Conduct Committee.
