The Universidade Católica Portuguesa, through its Faculty of Biotechnology and the Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF), is a partner in ProxIMed, a collaborative project involving 17 partners from 10 countries, aimed to transform the Mediterranean food system. The initiative focuses on developing sustainable proteins, ranging from plant-based sources to novel foods, using eco-friendly processes and adapting products to different regions. Researcher Manuela Pintado, from the Faculty of Biotechnology highlights the importance of her team's accumulated experience in the valorization of alternative proteins. This experience has been crucial in demonstrating the value of different sustainable protein sources. In the context of the mentioned project, the focus is on mycoproteins, which, in addition to being a sustainable option, have high nutritional value and the potential to promote health.
On September 19 and 20, 2024, the Faculty of Biotechnology will host the ProxIMed Steering Committee Meeting, bringing together researchers and partners to discuss progress and define the next steps. ProxIMed aims to develop over 20 alternative protein products, with the active involvement of consumers and industries, promoting a healthier and more sustainable food future for the Mediterranean region.
Through its involvement in this project, the Faculty of Biotechnology and CBQF reaffirm their commitment to innovation and sustainability, contributing to solutions that enhance food security and reduce environmental impact.
