On January 15, 2025, the Nutrition and Plant Biotechnology group of the CBQF – Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry at the Faculty of Biotechnology (ESB) of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto organized a dynamic and innovative workshop dedicated to studying the benefits of legumes for the environment and nutrition.

Legumes play a vital role in agricultural sustainability, food security, and human health. Their unique ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen reduces the need for chemical fertilizers and promotes soil regeneration, making them essential for more sustainable agricultural systems. Additionally, legumes are an affordable source of high-quality proteins, fiber, and micronutrients, playing a fundamental role in combating malnutrition and promoting balanced diets. The versatility of these crops in agri-food systems and their low environmental impact make them a key ally in climate change adaptation and the development of innovative and sustainable agricultural practices.

This workshop is part of a series of events held across 12 countries under the European LegumES project, coordinated by the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, and in Portugal it had the support of the LeguCon national network. The initiative brought together a diverse group of 25 national participants, including farmers, industry representatives, nutritionists, retailers, distributors, researchers, and agricultural consultants, for an interactive discussion on the value of Ecosystem Services provided by legumes.

During the session, participants conducted a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) that highlighted the need to monitor and quantify indicators of Ecosystem Services. These services encompass natural processes and functions that sustain life, such as resource provision, environmental regulation, ecological support, and cultural benefits. This integrated approach is crucial to holistically valuing legumes, promoting a balance between ecological and economic goals in agricultural systems.

The event was a success, and the results will be combined with those from other participating countries to identify diverse agricultural practices that enhance biodiversity, regeneration, and soil fertility. This initiative underscores the ESB/CBQF's commitment to promoting sustainable agricultural practices, contributing to more resilient and healthier agri-food systems.
