We are proud to announce that Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry’s researcher Sandra Borges has been awarded the Molecules 2023 Best Paper Award for her publication titled "Fish By-Products: A Source of Enzymes to Generate Circular Bioactive Hydrolysates", published in the MDPI journal Molecules (https://www.mdpi.com/1420-3049/28/3/1155).

The awarded study explores an innovative and sustainable approach to valorising fish by-products through the production of protein hydrolysates using enzymatic extracts derived from fish viscera. This method achieved hydrolysis degrees comparable to those obtained using commercial enzymes, while also contributing to circular bioeconomy goals by reducing waste and maximizing resource efficiency.

This work illustrates the potential of fish by-products as a dual source of both enzymes and high-value hydrolysates, supporting the development of functional foods and offering a sustainable alternative to traditional fishmeal production.

This recognition by the Molecules editorial board highlights the relevance and scientific excellence of ongoing research at the CBQF, and reinforces CBQF's commitment to sustainability, innovation, and value creation through bio-based solutions.
