Jornadas de Biotecnologia debated artificial intelligence and ethics in science

The Arménio Miranda Auditorium was packed to host another Jornadas de Biotecnologia, organized by students and former students of the Faculty of Biotechnology at the Universidade Católica in Porto. An annual meeting that seeks to establish a link between current students and future engineers and professionals from different areas of study related to biotechnology. Between the 29th and 30th of March, organizations such as iLof, Craftable Software, Farfetch, PeekMed, FC Porto, Tec4Med, Amyris, TECMAFOODS: Insect based feed & food Lda, among others, were present.

“Sustainable Diets in Young Portuguese Couples: Alternative Protein Dinner”; “We taste with the brain, not with the tongue”; “The hospital of the future”; “Extracurricular Projects”; “Algae… the food of the future?”; “Medical genetics”; “Hacking – Security in Health Systems”; “Communication in Science: 'Make science understandable'” and “The importance of AI in Data Science” were the themes of the lectures. The event, which took place at the Faculty of Biotechnology, took place over two days, in the format of a scientific congress, and featured nationally and internationally renowned speakers in the areas of Biotechnology, Microbiology, Nutritional Sciences, Food Engineering, Biomedical and of the Environment.

The objective was to promote familiarization with the world of Biotechnology and the industrial and business reality, but also to promote greater contact and knowledge of the most recent technological and scientific discoveries, through lectures, speed dating, workshops and a round table on ethics in science. Participants clarified doubts and interacted with representatives of organizations such as iLof; Craftable Software; Farfetch; PeekMed; FC Porto; Tec4Med; Amyris; TECMAFOODS: insect based feed & food, Lda, among others.

The Jornadas de Biotecnologia were attended by Isabel Braga da Cruz, Pro-Rector of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, who works on behalf of the Porto Regional Centre; Paula Castro, director of the Faculty of Biotechnology; Leonor Pinto, President of the National Association of Nutrition Students - ANEN; Sara Pereira, President of the National Association of Biomedical Engineering Students – ANNEB; André Mimoso, President of the Students' Association of the Faculty of Biotechnology and with Simone Sá, President of the 2023 Jornadas de Biotecnologia.
