Objectives and competences

The contemporary reality of economic and organizational life is increasingly confronted with the responsibility of living with a diversity of cultures and religious traditions without causing inequality or harming the social cohesion indispensable for the realization of the various collective projects. Knowledge of these cultures and traditions, even if an introductory one, is the minimum requirement for a successful response to the challenges in today’s global organizations.
Upon completion of this course students should

1. possess a knowledge of the history, central texts, beliefs, practices and contemporary manifestations of different world religious traditions (Hinduism,Buddhism,Judaism,Islam, and, in particular,Christianity);
2. recognize the fundamental intersections of religion and social/political/cultural life, and in particular economic and business life;
3. to appreciate and respect the richness and diversity of the worldviews and values of different world religious traditions.

Teaching Methodologies

Classes resort to an expository methodology, in which the student learns when exposed to concepts, principles, deductions or statements presented by the teacher, complemented with classroom discussions and an inquiry-based learning task of research and presentation, which is undertaken in a group context with the teacher’s assistance. In order to learn, the student must understand and above all have the possibility to inquire and search for relevant information.

Additionally, an inquiry based learning methodology is also used in the case studies, which are provided in advance, to be prepared and discussed by the students, in groups. The cases involve religions previously addressed in class and their intersection with the life of organizations.
