Doutorado, em 1990, em Ciências Naturais pela Univ. de Sarre, Saarbrücken, Alemanha. Licenciado em Ciências Farmacêuticas pela Univ. do Porto, Portugal, em 1985; e o seu. É Professor Associado da UCP-ESB onde leciona diversas unidades curriculares na área da química. É co-autor de mais de 60 artigos e capítulos de livros. Interesses de R&D incluem: produtos de base biológica e bioativos de plantas e microalgas e sua aplicação nos setores de alimentos, rações e saúde. Coordenador de mais de 20 projetos de I&D nacionais e internacionais; 2 patentes portuguesas; revisor convidado de várias revistas internacionais e avaliador de projetos de I&D AdI, CRUP e FCT. Editor Associado das revistas Marine Drugs, Int. Biobased Plastics e Frontiers in Marine Sciences. Ocupou o cargo de Diretor do CBQF (vários mandatos). Coordena o European MSc BiFTec-FOOD4S. e fez parte da coordenação do mestrado europeu SEFOTECH.NUT durante 10 anos.
