O projeto FitNESS - Food Packaging open courseware for higher Education and Staff of companieS teve início em janeiro de 2018 e durante três anos vai desenvolver materiais didáticos para o ensino de temas de embalagem com base em e-learning. Integram este projeto algumas das instituições mais relevantes na área de embalagem na Europa, como a Universidade Técnica de Munique, a Faculdade de tecnologia alimentar e biotecnologia da Universidade de Zagreb, a Agrosup Dijon e o instituto françês Agroparistech.

A ESB foi pioneira do ensino de embalagem em Portugal e tem aumentado o seu papel no ensino de embalagem a nível europeu através da receção de alunos Erasmus e de outros Mestrados Europeus para as disciplinas de embalagem. A Doutora Fátima Poças, diretora do CINATE, é a coordenadora do projeto pela ESB.

O financiamento, num total de 36 000€, vai permitir trabalhar os objetivos abaixo.

1. European wide interactive platform dedicated to the food/packaging thematic.
2. Interactive online courses on generic know-how on food packaging materials and specialized know-how on the rules for materials in contact with food, their transfer properties, migration modelling, eco design, etc.
3. Case studies with quizzes about packaging alimentary safety, packaging environmental impact, ithe suitability for use of packaging, and shelf life of packaged food.
4. Guidelines providing information concerning the suitability of packaging materials for foodstuffs, packaging eco conception, packaging and perceived product evaluation.
5. Webinars addressing packaging news matters, results of recent packaging R&D projects.
6. Targeted training sessions for trainers specialized in packaging.

All deliverables will be hosted by the Iseki (Integrating Food Science and Engineering Knowledge Into the Food Chain) platform for future use.
