The Faculty of Biotechnology was founded in 1984, more than 40 years ago. Here, multiple activities are carried out, with an emphasis on Higher Education (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD and Postgraduate courses), Research and Development (fundamental and applied nature projects, in the laboratory and with companies), and Extension to the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors, through the provision of services and continuous training.

Research and Development

Here, the investigation is framed by CBQF – Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry, an Associated Laboratory with the maximum classification (Excellent) and whose activities focus on applied biotechnology. The main themes are Food & Nutrition, Environment & Resources, Biobased & Biomedical Products and Fermentation Solutions.

Higher Education

3 Bachelor’s degrees (1st cycle of studies available only in Portuguese)

  • Microbiology (6 semesters, 180 ECTS);
  • Nutrition Sciences (8 semesters, 240 ECTS);
  • Bioengineering (6 semesters, 180 ECTS), with the branches of Food Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.

4 Master’s degrees (2nd cycle of studies, and 3 are taught in English):

  • Food Engineering;
