Depois do sucesso do 1º Fórum de Inovação em Engenharia Biomédica: Think Big in Biomedical Engineering, a Alumni da Escola Superior de Biotecnologia da Universidade Católica Portuguesa está presentemente a organizar o 2º Fórum de Inovação em Biotecnologia: Think Big em Biotecnologia. Este evento pretende proporcionar um encontro geracional entre antigos e atuais alunos da Universidade Católica, trazendo à Universidade key-stakeholders na área da Biotecnologia, nas suas múltiplas vertentes.

Pretende-se assim reforçar a importância cada vez maior que esta área tem no nosso quotidiano, particularmente reforçada nos tempos atuais pela situação pandémica que estamos a atravessar, que terá necessariamente uma inovação biotecnológica a curto-médio prazo.

Neste contexto, gostaríamos de o convidar a estar presente no evento a realizar na manhã de sábado, dia 10 de outubro de 2020 (9h30-13h00). De forma a garantir a segurança do evento, este o evento será este ano realizado em formato webinar através da plataforma Zoom.

O evento contará com a presença grandes nomes dos meios académico e empresarial, pelo que estão reunidas todas as condições para um evento de elevado interesse científico e industrial.

Seeram Ramakrishna

Honorary Everest Chair, Professor Seeram Ramakrishna, FREng, FBSE is among the top four authors at the National University of Singapore (NUS). NUS is ranked among the top 10 engineering and technology universities in the world. He is a full professor of materials engineering since 2003. He mentored over 50 PhD students, and more than 100 post-doctoral and visiting scientists over the past 25 years. Thomson Reuters identified him among the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds. His Google Scholar H-index exceeds 154 and his publications have attracted over 108,000 citations. Clarivate Analytics recognized him among the Top 1% Highly Cited Researchers in the world in materials science and cross-fields categories. Microsoft Academic ranked him among the top 36 salient authors out of three million materials researchers worldwide. He received PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK. He is an elected Fellow of UK Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng); Singapore Academy of Engineering; Indian National Academy of Engineering; and ASEAN Academy of Engineering & Technology. He is also an elected Fellow of American Association of the Advancement of Science (AAAS); ASM International; American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME); American Institute for Medical & Biological Engineering (AIMBE); Institution of Mechanical Engineers, IMechE and Institution of Materials, Minerals & Mining, IoM3, UK; ISTE, India; and International Union of Biomaterials Science & Engineering (FBSE). He is senior member of IEEE. He co-authored books Medical Devices- Standards, Regulations and Practices; Biomaterials- A Nano Approach; and An Introduction to Biocomposites. He is an Editor of Elsevier Current Opinion in Biomedical Engineering. He is an editorial board member of NATURE Scientific Reports. He is regarded as the guru of electrospinning and nanofibers. He pioneered nanofiber scaffolds for tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, stem cells and controlled drug delivery. His team is 3D Printing PEEK biomaterial. He teaches Engineering Materials in Medicine.

João Nascimento 

João Nascimento is a curious human. Founder of ProjectOpenAir - Médicos doMundo, Mindscripts, Surfology among other cool projects. Addicted to Neuroscience, Complex Systems and currently in a relationship with Computer Science. A spaghetti, surf and dogs kind of guy, who lived and worked in several countries but still can't drive to the airport without getting lost.

Paulo Fonte

Paulo J. R. Fonte has a degree in Technological Physics Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (1987) and a PhD in Radiation Physics from the University of Coimbra (1993). Since 2000 he has been a coordinating professor at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra. Its scientific activity has focused on gaseous detectors of elementary particles with a special focus on Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC). The LPC RPC group (www.lip.pt) has developed the technology of these detectors and has carried out applications in Nuclear Physics, Astroparticles and Medical Imaging.

Rui Oliveira

Rui Oliveira is Associate Professor with habilitation at the Department of Informatics of University of Minho, director of the Minho Advanced Computing Centre, Co-Director of the UT Austin Portugal program, and member of the board of INESC TEC. He obtained a PhD degree in Computer Science from the École Polytechnique Fédèrale de Lausanne in 2000. His main research contributions have been in the field of fault-tolerant distributed agreement and epidemic multicast algorithms and in the conception, development and assessment of dependable database systems.

Luís Valente

The enormous advances in medicine in recent centuries have been based on the idea that the same treatment is effective for the entire population - when, unfortunately, it is not always so. A large part of today's health industry challenges are dealing with complex, heterogeneous diseases, which can result of different factors and can have different behaviors for different individuals. In Alzheimer's disease alone, in the last 14 years, more than 400 clinical studies have failed to seek treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to use new development paradigms, of which the Artificial Intelligence stands out.

Joana Maricato 

Joana Maricato is the Market Research Manager at New Nutrition Business. New Nutrition Business is a global company that since 1995 has specialised in primary research and analysis of developments in the health, food and nutrition industry. New Nutrition Business provides practical and useable insights for food and beverage, ingredient and dietary supplement companies around the world. The focus of Joana Maricato is on identifying the best strategies for commercializing nutrition science and advising on how to translate market trends into opportunities. Her experience on consumer and market research helps clients to create new products with health benefits. During the past years she has been involved in several projects with food and beverage companies, ingredients companies and research institutes that resulted on entries in new market segments, implementation of insights toolkits, re-branding, brand portfolio expansion and acquisitions. A graduate in biological sciences, Joana also studied marketing and business strategy during her Master’s in Health Food Innovation Management in Maastricht University and her studies in the London School of Economics and Political Sciences.

Daniela Patrícia Peneda Pacheco 

Daniela Pacheco received her BSc in bioengineering from the Catholic University of Portugal (2011), followed of a MSc in pharmaceutical technology from the University of Porto (2013). Daniela conducted both her BSc and MSc thesis at 3B’s Research Group in Guimarães (February 2011 – November 2013), where she got experience with biomaterials, drug delivery, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. She continued her work as a researcher at 3B’s Research Group (February 2014 – August 2015), followed by a researcher position at IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi — Italy (November 2015 – April 2016). Recently, Daniela obtained a PhD in materials engineering at Politecnico di Milano (November 2016 – December 2019), in which she has engineered innovative high throughput tissue models that recreate human microbiota in vitro to be exploited by Pharma and Biotech during drug development. The technology developed during her PhD has been awarded with different scientific and technological prizes, including an Acceleration Program that enabled to translate the technology into a Startup — Bac 3 Gel with headquarters in TagusPark — Lisbon (May 2020). Daniela is a founder member and, currently, CTO of Bac 3 Gel Lda, where she conducts product development and technological validation activities, as well as market analyses.

Pedro Costa

Pedro is a Robotics Product Manager at iSYS Medizintechnik GmbH for minimally invasive robotic technologies and patient stabilization products. He is responsible for planning and coordinating product realization, from product concepts and roadmaps, to research and development, as well as being the first point of contact with reference sites and customers. Pedro has 5 years’ experience as Project Engineer and Development Project Manager. In his former and ongoing projects, which include joint-ventures with some of the largest and leading medical device companies in the world or internal product development efforts, he has been responsible for managing all areas of product development and leading efforts to ensure reliable, accurate and intuitive solutions are brought in time to market. Pedro has a MsC in Biomedical Engineering and during his time at the academy, he has been the inventor of a patent application and co-author of 5 peer reviewed articles.

Moderator: Hugo Sousa 

Hugo is a multiple award-winning, t-shaped entrepreneur, corporate innovation strategist and hands-on geek with 20 years of experience in Consulting (Head of Innovation), Start-ups (Co-Founder) and Government (CIO/CTO). When Hugo is not challenging the status quo of organisations, we find him speaking at tech and innovation events or giving university lectures. He mentors entrepreneurs, leads a trailblazing global corporate innovation community - The Innovation Cafe - and has a renowned and respected LinkedIn profile. Hugo is also a TEDx speaker. His career includes an impressive and diverse list of well-known companies, consultancies and Public Service entities, including Capita Plc, BearingPoint, Lionbridge, Arthur D. Little, Gfi and Portuguese Government Justice and Tourism sectors. Born in Lisbon, Hugo now lives in London, via Dublin. His educational journey includes academic qualifications in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Computer Science and Management.
