Ryan Arruda, a Microbiology student at the Faculty of Biotechnology (ESB) of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto, has been awarded the Católica Fellowships for Portuguese American Students. At the age of 18, Ryan is from Massachusetts in the United States and joins the Microbiology class with a strong connection to Portugal that goes back to his family roots.

Ryan, who completed his high school studies at Old Rochester Regional High School, located about 50 miles from Boston, began his university search more than a year ago. Initially, it seemed that his academic future would unfold in the United States, but the desire to explore new horizons led him to consider studying abroad. With the support of his parents, Ryan decided to seek out international opportunities, and Porto, a city he has always held dear, emerged as the ideal destination. His love for Portugal is not new. His mother was born in Montalegre, and although she emigrated to the United States at just six years old, she always kept Portuguese culture alive within their family. Ryan grew up surrounded by Portuguese traditions, attending a Portuguese language school to improve his language skills and learn more about his heritage. This cultural and familial connection motivated him to apply for the Católica Fellowship and choose the Porto campus, a city that fascinates him with its rich history and tradition. In addition to being a student, Ryan is a junior member of the Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States (PALCUS), reflecting his deep involvement with the Portuguese community in the USA.

Now, as a Microbiology student at ESB, Ryan is excited about the opportunity to explore science and deepen his knowledge in this field, which he considers to be at the intersection of life sciences and medicine. Although the future is still uncertain, Ryan is considering continuing his studies in medicine or pursuing a career in research in the United States after completing his degree. "I’m excited about the challenges that Microbiology will bring, and I know that my time here will be valuable for my future. I’ve already met some amazing people and feel very welcomed by the ESB community," said Ryan. He believes that his experience at Universidade Católica Portuguesa will provide him with memories and lessons that will stay with him for the rest of his life.

The awarding of the Católica Fellowships for Portuguese American Students reflects Universidade Católica Portuguesa's commitment to strengthening ties with the Portuguese diaspora and supporting Portuguese-American students in their academic and personal development from an international perspective. Ryan Arruda's presence at ESB is an inspiring example of how education can unite cultures and open doors to the future.
